This Valentine’s Day, DROMONE’s employees participated in the Irish Heart Foundation Virtual 5K Love Run to help raise funds to fight against heart disease and stroke in workplaces, communities and schools across Ireland as well as providing support to patients.

The Irish Heart Foundation is an organization that we hold very near to our hearts since the passing of our beloved colleague and friend, Donal Devine, on Valentine’s Day 2017. On Sunday, DROMONE saw employees from all across Meath, Dublin, Westmeath, Louth and Cavan participate and complete the challenge. Although our employees could not come together physically due to Covid19 and current government guidelines, we were able to come together in spirit.

DROMONE would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. 2020 has presented us with some unforeseen challenges, many of which were completely out of our control. But at DROMONE, we made sure we continued to deliver. We implemented many new procedures to make sure we could operate as normal and keep our employees safe and most importantly, keep you safe.

Providing our customers with the safest products on the market is our top priority. You, the farmers and construction workers didn’t stop working, so why should we?

It was a challenging year for us all, but we got through it together! So, let’s not forget all we learned throughout 2020 and here’s to 2021!

Patrick joined the DROMONE Production team in 1980. He was 1 of the 7 strong work force employed by DROMONE which was less than half the size of Phase 1 at that time. Having spent a number of years in Production, he later moved into R&D where Tractor Hitch samples were sketched on paper and made on the back of the Tractor. This had been common practice for years until 1989 when ZETOR launched their UR3 Tractor and needed a DROMONE hitch for it. Patrick was given the task of making the hitch, however the problem was there was no Tractor to work on in DROMONE, or Ireland for that matter. Patrick went on the boat from Dublin to Hollyhead one evening and travelled to Kings Linn in Norfolk to make the first ever prototype on the customers site and returned to DROMONE the next day with the sample.

Having spent many years in R&D, the introduction of the Construction product line in 2001 brought change his way again as he took on a new role in sales. Patrick became the face of DROMONE in the market, visiting customers and attending shows all over the globe. Today in his role, 40 years on, he is still the face and voice of DROMONE delivering first class service on our behalf in both Construction and Agriculture contributing to our success.

Unfortunately, I was only a small part of Paddy’s career – 1/10th to be exact. My relationship with Paddy began in August 2015. In that short time we shared some fun and even intimate experiences.

Paddy always took good care of me when I would visit Dromone so it was only fair that I return the favor when he was in the U.S.; solving my Tag problems. I think Paddy was truly happiest with a spanner (as we say – wrench) in his hand. And, he did solve all my problems with Tag. He was my inspiration when he would show up to work in his fine Dromone lab coat. I kept asking him to send me one just like it – he never did. I had to go buy my own. Of course I didn’t wear it as well as Paddy but I think it was a proud moment for him when I sent him a picture of me in the coat – while solving another problem that he had trained me well for.

Patrick Briody (left) with Bill Buckles (right) of Coastline Equipment.

On Paddy’s first trip over we visited Esco in Cincinnatti. After a hard day of meetings I treated Paddy to the best Barbecue restaurant in America – the Montgomery Inn. Paddy was seated at the best table in the house and was given his very own special bib to wear – you know how messy he can be.

The next trip over coincided with Valentine’s Day. As it turned out, Paddy was my Valentine. We shared a cozy dinner with Gary Wilt (TAG) and his wife. We also had a fine time visiting some of the great tourist spots around Chattanooga.

I am a little foggy about the next trip over that Paddy made. What I do remember is we ended up in Nashville on Music Row. We must have visited 10 bars; each one packed with a lot of people, great music and cold beer.

My wife Gwynne and I had the great pleasure of attending Dromone’s 40th Anniversary party. I would describe myself as a mediocre to poor dancer. Once I saw Paddy and his dance moves I knew that I could not come close to matching his skill . I stayed firmly at my table – until Mary Egenton yanked me up and tested my cardiac strength and dancing ability. I’m sure she was impressed by neither.

Patrick Briody (left) presented with 40 years of service cake by William Egenton (right).

Paddy’s last trip corresponded closely with Christmas – I believe it was December 2019. This trip was very quick but Paddy managed to have a festive time.

I have had the pleasure and good fortune to meet a lot of people during all my years of travel. I can honestly say that knowing Paddy Briody ranks among the best. Happy 40th anniversary to my friend Paddy! Oh, I found a nice tree in Ireland where you can go rest when you need it.

Happy holidays ladies and gentlemen. Erik Ortega here, your Dromone North America sales and marketing manager. I’ve been on the Dromone team for roughly 9 months now, so I guess that means I’m officially born into the role now, ba-dum-bum! My initiation week was spent in the great unholy land of Las Vegas with several of the Dromone team attending the Conexpo construction show. It was a fun week but we were all lucky to get out of there when we did as lockdowns were ominous and who knows what kind of trouble we would have ended up in if locked down in Sin City. While most of my 9 months have been spent working from home, I have gotten out more than a few times for dealer and distributor visits, and a few coupler installations to boot – nothing beats an in-person meeting. With that said, Zoom and MS Teams virtual meetings have been quite a pleasant way to get to know some of my Dromone team and customers and introduce both to my guitar collection and my 3-year-old son who sometimes barges in to deservingly and physically command my attention.

While 2020 may go down in the books for some as a dumpster fire of a year, the flip side and positive view from my life, is that my family is healthy, my son is 3, and I’ve started a new role with a remarkable company, where I both bring and feel valued. I’ve jumped in head first on a number of fascinating projects and products, with a group of people that I’m very delighted to be a part of. Now, of course, I wish 2020 would have lived up to its turn of the century potential greatness, that is, without a pandemic, it really wasn’t all bad. Emerging from it and entering 2021 I know with greater confidence than before that I’m focused on what I want to be focused on, my family, my work, and core values within myself. I don’t think I’m alone in that sentiment. That’s enough from me for now, thanks for taking the time to read some of my experiences and thoughts. I wish you all and your loved ones a fantastic holiday season and a tremendous start to 2021. I look forward to visiting everyone in the new year. Cheers, y’all!

Hi, my name is Mary Magee and I’m the Human Resources Manager with DROMONE Engineering. I’m with DROMONE 13 years this year but these years have gone by in the blink of an eye!! This year has been a year like no other. We began to feel the ripples back in February when word was spreading across the world of this dreaded COVID 19 virus for which there was no cure, no treatment and no vaccine! Almost straightaway we introduced a “No handshake policy” and from there we have changed almost everything about the way we interact with each other and our customers on a daily basis in order to help keep everybody safe.

I’ve taken on the role as Lead COVID 19 Coordinator with DROMONE and together with the company’s COVID officers (made up of Operations Managers/Team Leaders/ Operations Support Manager and employee representatives) we have implemented numerous COVID 19 safety procedures and related training to ensure we are compliant with the public health advice and that our workplace is as safe as possible for everyone. We keep in regular contact also with our colleagues working remotely for the last 9 months and we know this too can have its challenges.

My deepest sympathies go out to all employees that have lost loved ones this year and have had to mourn their loss without the physical support of friends and even family members in these tragic circumstances.

I believe as a result of COVID 19 we have become more resilient and reflective individually but also collectively and with the emergence of numerous COVID 19 vaccines beckoning in early 2021 the year ahead looks full of promise and of hope.

I’m Ronan Timmins and I’ve been a Product Design Engineer in Dromone since 2013. In the last few years I have moved from focusing purely on AG products to working more broadly on innovation projects. 2020 started with a few big project milestones – We demo’d HAL at LAMMA in January and the ML:SMART at Conexpo in March along with a concept of a new app for product training and support. The show was a great experience. As an engineer, getting away from the desk and talking to customers now and again is important and the show was also a good chance to see what’s new and learn a bit from other companies. Thankfully I got that chance because no sooner was it over than the world was going into lockdown. I’ve been working from home ever since. The transition to working from home was surprisingly easy – the technology has worked really well and with everybody on Teams it’s been easy to stay in touch. Of course it has its limitations though – luckily I’m not too far away in Munterconnaught so coming on site to review a prototype or witness something in manufacturing has been easy, but I haven’t had a breakfast roll since February!

2020 hasn’t been all doom and gloom though as our little girl was born in July. It has been a challenge not being able to meet with family and friends in those first few months but we’re just thankful that all is ok and like everybody else, looking forward to what’s sure to be a better year.

Hi! My name is Lauren Dunn and I’ve worked in Marketing at Dromone for approximately 4 years now. I’ve been working from home since March after returning from the ConExpo trade show in Las Vegas. It is quite surreal to think that the whole world went into complete lockdown straight after the event and in some sense the team and I were lucky to get home! Everything completely changed and my role (like many others) became completely remote and Microsoft teams took over. Presentations became more frequent, knowledge sharing more informal and communication more streamlined. All meetings and coffee breaks with friends became video calls which was great because you didn’t feel so isolated at home. Having set up office in the dining room almost 9 months ago, it really has become the new normal and life before seems like a distant memory.

Despite the global pandemic, Dromone has had a great run in 2020. This year alone, we exhibited at Lamma in the UK and ConExpo in Las Vegas (both pre covid) and launched a number of new innovative products including HAL, ML:SMART and many others. Dromone was also the winner of a number of industry awards this year. On January 29th, Dromone’s ML:SMART quick coupler was awarded the IMR Product Innovation & Design Award. This product was also nominated for the Machinery Movers Best in Tech & Innovation Award 2020 which has now been rescheduled to 2021. In September, The Dromone HAL Pick-Up Hitch system was awarded the Enterprise Ireland Farm Safety Innovation Award which will allow us to exhibit in the Innovation Arena at the Ploughing Championships 2021…. Let’s just say it’s been a busy year!!

I hope that 2021 will be an even better year for Dromone and everything we have learned about ourselves as individuals during Covid19 is not forgotten.

Hi! My name is Lauren Chatten and I started in Dromone part time in June, 2014. I’ve had the opportunity to work in a few different departments over the past few years but I joined the Planning department in May 2017 and I have been here ever since.

I have been working onsite since the start of the pandemic. For DROMONE, it was business as usual so my job never stopped. At the beginning, it was strange to have such little personnel working onsite compared to usual. There were no more face-to-face production meetings which usually took place every day in the office. Instead, we started using Microsoft Teams for all our meetings which was an adjustment at the start.

In October, Covid19 had hit my household and I started working from home for just over 2 weeks until it was safe to return to the office. Working from home was difficult to begin with as it was a sudden change and it took a while to adjust to. I had to get a number of items sent home to me such a computer screen as I found it difficult to work with production schedules off my laptop alone. Microsoft Teams was a great help while working from home as everyone was just a call away, therefore I didn’t feel isolated in any way.

My highlight of 2020 was attending the IMR Manufacturing and Supply Chain Awards in Dublin back in January, when the ML:SMART quick coupler won the Product Innovation and Design Award.

I hope that 2021 will be another year of continued success for Dromone. Wishing everyone a Happy Christmas & Happy New Year!

My name is Padraig Brosnan and I work as a Construction Product Design Engineer. I began working here at Dromone in June 2018, so 2 and a half years. I previously worked in the renewable energy sector, but have always had a passion for machinery both agricultural and construction. I have been working from home in Co. Kerry (or what I like to call the Dromone Munster office) since the end of March. My family run a small suckler beef farming operation, so I have the unique opportunity to operate and interact with Dromone products every day. I travel to Dromone to work onsite when I have prototypes being built, I feel it is essential to be as hands on as possible throughout that process. Adapting to remote working and the lack of face to face meetings was a little strange at the start, but after a few weeks it became ‘the new normal’. There have been a lot of positives including easier collaboration for design reviews, help and support. I have found remote working to have huge benefits at particular stages in the design process as it allows for greater uninterrupted focus.

Some of my 2020 highlights include:

The Irish Manufacturing Awards, it was a great honour to have our ML Smart Coupler take the top prize for Product Innovation & Design ahead of some very big names in manufacturing in Ireland.

I completed SolidWorks CSWA certification in Mechanical Design, it was a good opportunity to upskill and become efficient in modelling & design.

Getting the opportunity to produce Dromone’s new range of ML Tilt Couplers working on designs 5T up to 10T, along with other strategic projects.

Completion of my Post Graduate Certificate in Innovation & Enterprise Development at Trinity College Dublin.

Like everyone, I would hope for Covid-19 restrictions to lift and vaccines to be rolled out. I play rugby with my local team in Castleisland, hopefully we will get back to playing competitive games in the new year! I would like to get back working onsite in Dromone a little more often – I get a buzz off being around the factory, seeing raw steel getting turned into finished products! I hope to get to more sites to visit some of our product in the field in the coming year, as well as attending some trade shows when they get back up and running.

The year 2020 has certainly been the year of change, but for DROMONE, 2020 was also the year of innovation. The emergence of Covid19 worldwide caused drastic changes to the way businesses operate, and the way we operate as individuals. Despite the pandemic, DROMONE remained focused on providing our customers with the safest and most innovative products on the market. Due to this determination, we were still able to launch new innovations in the agriculture and construction industries.

Agri-Tech Innovations

On 7th & 8th January 2020, DROMONE launched three new product innovations at the LAMMA Show in Birmingham. These products included the HAL Pick-Up Hitch system and two new designs of the D80 Ball Hitch system; the D80 Drawball for open field applications and the D80 ball for the Fendt range of tractors.

The DROMONE HAL system is the first pick-up hitch with an in-cab alert system to ensure safe coupling. It is an electronic monitoring system that provides positive confirmation that the trailer has been hitched safely and the locking mechanisms have engaged. The pick-up hitch has integrated rugged sensors and a control box providing audible and visual signals to the cab. Unlike conventional indicators that can show a false positive, the HAL system uses multiple sensors to reliably alert the operator of an unhitched and unlocked pick-up hitch.

The D80 Ball Hitch for the Fendt range of tractors offers operators the quietest towing experience when compared to conventional hook and ring systems.

The D80 Drawball is a drawbar with all the benefits of a ball hitch. It is designed for open field applications such as baling, spraying and tillage.

HAL Award

In September, DROMONE’s HAL (Hitched & Locked) Pick-Up Hitch system was awarded the 2020 Farm Safety Enterprise Ireland Innovation Award. This award will allow DROMONE to exhibit in Enterprise Irelands Innovation Arena at the National Ploughing Championships 2021.The Innovation Arena showcases ground-breaking Agri-tech related products and innovations from Irish Agri-Tech companies every year and we are delighted to have been given this opportunity to showcase the HAL system.

The ConExpo tradeshow took place on March 10th-14th in Las Vegas, Nevada. At the show, we launched the new next generation hydraulic quick coupler, the ML:SMART. The ML:SMART is a secure, safe and smart universal quick coupler with live attachment sensing and feedback. Incorporating smart technology, it is the first quick coupler to provide real-time feedback to machine operators and site operatives that are in close proximity to the machine and most at risk of serious injury. The new quick coupler was developed by DROMONE stemming from determination to take safety to the next level. In 2017, we identified opportunity for improvement to the 2016 ISO 13031 standard, which created stimulus for continuous improvement and innovation from which we developed the ML:SMART.

At ConExpo, DROMONE also showcased the new Augmented Reality support tool. The platform enabled users to investigate the internal workings and operating procedures involved with DROMONE couplers. Taking all customer feedback on board, this project is being further developed by the DROMONE team and will be officially launched in 2021.

ML:SMART Awards

On January 29th, DROMONE’s ML:SMART quick coupler was awarded the IMR Product Innovation & Design Award. It was a great achievement for the team to receive recognition in this category. This product was officially launched a few weeks later at ConExpo 2020. In February, DROMONE’s ML:SMART quick coupler was also nominated for the Best in Tech & Innovation Award at the 2020 Machinery Movers Awards. This event was due to take place in March 2020 but due to Covid19 it has been rescheduled to November 2021.

Covid19

2020 brought its fair share of challenges to business across the globe. In March, Ireland went into lockdown due to Covid19. For DROMONE, it remained business as usual. Providing safety critical components to the agriculture and construction industries is deemed as an essential service, so we continued to serve our customers throughout this difficult period. Many DROMONE employees began working from home and numerous safety precautions were put in place to ensure the safety of all onsite personnel, such as hand sanitizing stations, face masks and social distancing measures. A team of staff members completed online training around Covid19 to ensure a safe working environment for all. Office layouts were re-evaluated for those required onsite and daily cleaning schedules implemented. Due to the Covid19 safety measures in place, DROMONE has remained open and operating as normal.

Engineers Ireland is the voice of the engineering profession in Ireland. Their 25,000 members make up a community of creative professionals delivering solutions for society. They have been representing the engineering profession since 1835, making them one of the oldest and largest professional bodies in Ireland.

CPD or ‘Continuous Professional Development’ has been a key pillar of DROMONE’s strategy to professionalize all areas of the organisation for many years, and hand in hand with our Lean journey, NPI process and other new drives throughout the plant, will help us achieve our aspirations of becoming a world class organisation. An Engineers Ireland CPD Accredited Employer recognizes good organisational practice in the area of professional development for all staff and receives the formal backing of the Department of Education & Skills. This structure will ensure the training and upskilling for all well into the future, solidifying our vision as an innovative and technological leading organisation.

Just before the summer shutdown at the end of July last, we received word that DROMONE had successfully retained its CPD Accreditation; first achieved in 2013 and had been granted the maximum three-year Award until the next reaccreditation.

This came on the back of a rigorous submission process which had been completed two weeks previously culminating in an online audit by representatives of Engineers Ireland’s CPD Team.

Unlike many audit / accreditation process, it was not sufficient to simply meet a previously achieved standard. In this case; to be re-accredited, we had to improve in two out of the seven streams of CPD while maintaining the level of the other five.

This is a big feather in our cap but the challenge for the next period will be to again improve in two further areas of the CPD standard, and more than that, to ensure all of the principles of CPD are embedded in the day to day working of DROMONE and to ensure the benefits to the individual and the company are realized.
